Week 2 - All about me!
Thursday 9 February 2017
Kia ora to whanau of Ruma tekau,
We have had a great week getting to know each other by exploring what is in our "About Me" paper bags. It was great to see students talking about why their special items were important to them. It is great to find out about passions and interests the students have and it can give us ideas as to what students might be interested in learning this year and how we can deliver it to them in a way that will motivate them to be involved and as a result learn.
We have been working hard at getting our routines for our literacy and maths programs. Students are having to learn a lot of new routines and expectations so they will be tired and a sensible bed time is highly recommended on school nights.
It is great to see students bringing their book bags to school and reading the books that are sent home. Our spelling programme is up and running. Here is the recommended process to help your child learn to spell unknown words.

Spelling
The coloured spelling booklet will come
home on Mondays. Please spend some time
encouraging your child to use the look, cover, write and check if you are right
routine. This is repeated for each
word. Then also test the words verbally. To make it fun they could use felts or write
them on the concrete with some chalk.
Students will also do class
activities to help them learn to spell the words.
Learning these words will help them become more fluent writers.
Please return the booklet to
school on Thursday.
We have swimming on Monday. Check out our photos of students sharing their special items with each other.
Have a great weekend.
Sam and Julie
